Fieldbus Host Testing

Fieldbus | Other Busses | Business Integration | Advanced Control | Batch | Safety Instrumented Systems | EDDL

Overview | Customer Success | See For Yourself | Host Testing | Device Downloads | Tutorial | Product Data Sheets | Whitepapers | For More Information

We are pleased to announce that DeltaV has recently successfully completed FOUNDATION Fieldbus Host Interoperability Support Testing (HIST) as we continue our commitment to innovation in the field of intelligent devices and field-based architecture.

The FOUNDATION Fieldbus HIST initiative is intended to provide a common method of determining host interoperability with registered devices. It is by no means an attempt to "register" a FF host system. Rather, it is a clearly defined set of individual functionalities that any host vendor may or may not choose to implement. A host vendor can choose to submit for testing against any or all of the 18 defined features outlined in the HIST specification.

As with other FOUNDATION Fieldbus specifications, at least two vendors must pass testing against a draft before it may be passed to final specification. Fisher-Rosemount Systems, with the DeltaV automation system, is proud to be amongst the very first group of successful applicants.

In addition to foundation testing each release of DeltaV undergoes testing with older FOUNDATION fieldbus devices. This ensures that all older revisions of devices continue to perform with the latest DeltaV enhancements. (This procedure is also conducted for all the other bus protocols supported by DeltaV.) Our goal is to ensure that your DeltaV upgrade goes smoothly; your older devices perform; and you get to enjoy the new features provided in each new DeltaV release.

In our test labs, we test all new foundation registered devices in our stress bed. This way we ensure that new devices from vendors with little experience with FOUNDATION fieldbus provide devices that perform in a DeltaV installation. We have absolutely no bias regarding the devices we test with DeltaV -- first in, first out. We invite you to see a video of our Interoperability test lab.

The Device Downloads utility provides a convenient way for you to access the list of devices for use with each version of the DeltaV system. In the event that you use devices from this list, you will have a positive experience with your DeltaV installation (assuming the 3rd party supplier is providing a quality product). To deliver on the promise of an easy installation and commissioning procedure, we include the device definitions of these listed devices in the DeltaV Configuration library. This way we can readily auto-sense the device and display device key functionality required in the facility making it easy for you to use.

Occasionally you may find yourself with a device that we have not yet tested with the release of DeltaV in your facility. Possible reasons for this include:

  • the device is new and we have not yet seen it
  • the device manufacturer revised the version of software in the older device
  • the version of DeltaV in your facility is not the latest revision and does not have a current library of tested devices

In the event that you attach a device that is not in the DeltaV device library, the device will be noted and illustrated in the DeltaV software but the nature of the device shall be listed as unknown. Per the foundation specification, device vendors are required to supply compatibility files for their devices. Obtain this compatibility file and load it in to DeltaV and off you go.
