Duquesne Energy Services (DES), a rapidly growing arm of Duquesne
Light, a major local utility, selected the DeltaV system as the SCADA
engine for a new business venture. DES recently purchased
the steam, electricity co-gen, and air production facilities
at H.J. Heinz, a large local food industry producer. The arrangement
between DES & Heinz transfers operating responsibility
for the facility to DES. Heinz reimburses DES for energy consumed.
The DeltaV system monitors and records energy production and
distribution and generates monthly reports. Additionally,
DeltaV records data relating to stack emissions. In the near
future, DES will automate key areas of the facility with DeltaV
fully engaged.
Based on the success of this new venture, DES is aggressively
seeking other opportunities like the one at H.J. Heinz.
The OPC connection
DES required a specific arrangement, storage, and reporting
of data that demanded a high degree of flexibility. And due
to the critical nature of the data, which was the sole basis
for revenue realization by DES, multiple storage methods were
essential. DES recognized OPC as a powerful tool that would
provide them with the accessibility to DeltaV data needed
for this project.
Later this month, a Web site will be added to a new intranet
as a means for DES & Heinz personnel to access OPC supplied
process data.
Tools
Hardware: DeltaV controller and ProfessionalPlus Workstation,
Rosemount reference class transmitters, and power monitoring
equipment.
Software: VB custom programs handling scheduling, data acquisition/formatting/summation,
data base access, integrity monitoring MS Access with multiple
tables, and relationships Crystal Reports report generator.
OPC Usability
Ron Rectenwald, the integration project leader for the project
integrator, Equipment and Controls, exclaimed, "We were
amazed at how quickly we were able to progress from having
just a conceptual knowledge of OPC to a fully functional,
robust OPC client. The data exchange rates were much higher
than we expected."
"The OPC tool provided us with the flexibility to make
the DES/Heinz project happen. While other techniques may have
worked, we're convinced that the final product would not be
nearly as impressive and would have required additional resources
at additional cost," added Rectenwald.
