Disease Preventative Maker Hooks DeltaV System
Omacor is a nutritional supplement that prevents cardiovascular
disease. It contains up to 90% Omega 3 EPA/DHA, a fatty acid
produced from fish oil. Pronova Biocare, located in Sandefjord,
on the southeast cost of Norway, produces the Omega 3 EPA/DHA.
The company is owned by Norsk Hydro, a large fertilizer, aluminum,
magnesium, oil & gas manufacturer.
Development of the Omega 3 process has taken 15 years and
hundreds of thousands of investment dollars. Several patents
protect the production process. FDA approval has opened sales
to new markets in North America and Europe, calling for the
need to ramp up and streamline production.
 In
the spring of 2000, Pronova Biocare chose the DeltaV digital automation
system to control its first stage expansion. Project Management
was done by Hydro HTP Porsgrunn, a part of Norsk Hydro's engineering
division. Hitec Framnæs and Emerson Process Management in Porsgrunn
handled system configuration and commissioning.
